"The Colour of Our Shadows Unites Us" by Debra Scidone

Week 2: My deep and meaningful creation for my 7th Annual "An Invitation to be Curious" Open Art Studio and Garden
Open every Sunday in November 10am-4pm

As children we play without prejudice, we link and hold hands and make friends easily. We grow up and are influenced by those around us as adults I could only wish that we would focus on the colour of our shadows to unite us in this ever changing world as this is what we pass on to our children.

I used the simplicity of the childhood activity of the paper doll chain replacing the paper with multi-coloured felt symbolising our evolving genealogy as society weaves us  together and copper wire to depict our monotone shadows that  link us to the past and the  future.
Suspended between two perspex panels, additional shadows form from various light sources representing the many different people that influence us to make us who we are.

I  hope that someday I create a piece that is provoking and makes a difference to the world we live in.
This is one of two pieces that emerged for 2020 as my attempt to produce pieces that have a deep and meaningful message to send out into the world.
Simple but with a powerful message.

This piece definitely started the conversation last weekend.

Octopus, Stingray, Fish and Spoonbill Banners designs by Debra Scidone

Weather permitting my 4 designs for the second series of Mandurah Bridge Banners will be erected on Monday 17 September.

All very exciting, after submitting my design application in March this year the wait is nearly over to  see them hung on the new Mandurah traffic bridge.

Four of my designs were selected for the second series of banners to adorn the new Mandurah Traffic Bridge in Western Australia. The new traffic bridge has 14 Banners across its width. The Inaugural series was by Emma Blyth using images from her paintings for the Mandurah Crabfest over the past 20 years.

It was an exciting challenge to make the designs fit into the long thin design of the Banners.

The finished paintings were applied onto a marine ply base 1:5 ratio of the 7metre high banners that are only 500mm at their widest point. They were then photographed and sent off to be printed onto the PVC Banners.

Below shows the process of the banners from concept to completion or almost.....

The concepts chosen from my submission were
1. Octopus
2. Local fish
3. Stingray
4. Spoonbill
