ARTIST PROFILE
… ‘Debra’ comes from the Hebrew, meaning ‘Bee’…always moving from one thing to another. This encapsulates my approach to my art, moving easily from one style or media to the other depending on the subject matter.
My work has been described as "capturing a sense of intimacy and seclusion" and having a "wonderful sense of light and feeling of mystery"
Colour and light produce the mood and atmosphere. Love of nature presents an endless array of inspiration.
I began painting as a full-time artist in 2001, beginning with Pastels. They allowed me to indulge my passion and gave me time to paint without any time pressure as I juggled a young family. I enjoy the hands on technique, the vividness of the colours. Discovering the colourfix grounds allowed me to get the smooth finish that I desired.
When time permitted I challenged myself to conquering Watercolours. Working ‘wet in wet’ is fascinating as the colours merge on the paper rather than on my palette to achieve a glow from within the painting.
Acrylics with their vast array of mediums that change the viscosity and texture of the paints, makes this media equally exciting.
My exhibition based on the wetlands of the Peel Region, Mandurah, W.A. in 2011 included some collaborative art with Chris Marshall, introducing me to Mixed Media.
Finally my Oils, a lifetime work in progress, as this was always my childhood dream and driving force into the art world. To be an “Oil Painter”
I have enjoyed exhibiting my work since 2001 in Local and Regional W.A. Art Exhibitions holding many solo and joint exhibitions along the way.
My most memorable exhibition was when I converted a working character-filled shearing shed into a very formidable Gallery space in Corrigin Western Australia in 2017 and more recently I held a Solo Exhibition in the main foyer of The Pan Pacific Hotel in Perth, 2019.
Highlights also include a 2016 trip to China exhibiting in Beijing and Nantoong Universities. "From Australia to Beijing" The International Watercolour Exchange Exhibition,Tsinghua University Beijing, and "Australian Culture Art Exhibition", Nantoong University, China.
I am also involved with fellow artist, Chris Marshall in an arts business called “Exponential Expressions” in which we produce Collaborative Artworks. Our first Major Collaborative Exhibition "Mandjar Blues" was in Jan 2011 at the ALCOA Mandurah Art Gallery.
My Studio and Garden has been open to the public every year on each Sunday of November since 2014.
I will continue to expand my knowledge and look forward to the direction my art takes me into the future.
